LINEUP 2024
If you look at some of the most exciting, innovative & critically acclaimed electronic music that has come out of the beautiful North of England over the past years; from the psychedelic electronic rock of The Moonlandingz, to the folkloric radiophonic avantgarde Of Eccentronic Research Council ft Maxine Peake, to the party electro of International Teachers of Pop; at the forefront of all these projects (and many more) is a man in a hat and shades called Adrian Flanagan.
The album is a conceptual electronic dance pop record that marks the career trajectory of a fictional DJ & dance music producer: from his early years of performing at free festivals and raves – to having a dance pop crossover single go global – to the excess & hedonism & vampires of clubland culture – to the wheels falling off completely and the longing to retreat in to anonymity.
Memorials
As a duo these multi-instrumentalists cover plenty of
ground on stage, juggling instruments in a set up resembling that of a 5-piece band.
Their sound touches on the many points for which they are known, veering from melodic
songwriting to psychedelic noise, free jazz freakouts, tape loops and drones, and then back
again.
Their debut double album - Music For Film: Tramps! & Women Against The Bomb - is
out on 12 May 2023 via The state51 Conspiracy label.
Group Listening
Musical collaborators for the past decade, Paul Jones and Stephen Black are together known as the woodwind-and-key-wielding, sculptural-papier-mâché-hat-wearing Group Listening.
An ode to the gently psychedelic potential of wandering around in some place, any place,
every place: the places in one’s own mind, Walk invites you to listen and think; to slip
through the fabric of time a little or a lot, depending on how long you’ve got. Over all, to
paraphrase Walser, it invites you to glow and flower yourself in the glowing, flowering
present.
ICHI
‘What on earth is this?! It`s brilliant!’ STEVE LAMACQ
‘Hilarious & bonkers & brilliant!’ LAUREN LAVERNE
‘It's a trip to listen to and watch’ DON LETTS
ICHI, from Nagoya in Japan, takes the notion of a one-man band to new limits. Combining his quirky handmade instrument inventions (Stilt-bass, Kalilaphone, Balloon-pipes, Hatbox-pedal-drum, Tapumpet, Percussion-shoes & Hattrick-hat) with steel-drum, ping-pong balls, typewriter, toys & everyday objects all in the space of one short set. Somehow there's an ancient, ritualistic feel to his performances - he's like the misplaced leader of a tribe. To see ICHI live is to witness something so playful and unusual you know that you're experiencing something entirely new. It`s fun, it`s danceable, it`s exciting.
IMPERIAL WAX
Imperial Wax play a visceral, expressive fusion of garage rock and post-punk.
Forming in 2018 - Guitarist Pete Greenway, drummer Keiron Melling and bassist Dave Spurr, formerly known as the last and longest serving line up of The Fall, were invited by Damo Suzuki to join him as “Sound Carriers" for a one-off performance at The White Hotel, Salford. Rekindling their necessity for music, they set about searching for a vocalist. After a chance encounter at a pub in Colne and a lengthy conversation about the future of Imperial Wax, they decided to team up with Sam Curran, guitarist and vocalist from Leeds based punk band Black Pudding. As touring and life ground to a halt in 2020, new ideas started to simmer. With the lifting of restrictions, the band launched themselves into the writing of fresh material. Often too busy with a heavy, booming work schedule Dave turned over his bass duties to long-time friend of the band and Black Pudding bassist Shane Standrill.
SUEP
London-based ‘indie-supergroup’ SUEP were born out of a near-decade of playing in sheds and barns with like minded personnel, holding a mutual love for Paul McCartney, Jona Lewie, the B-52s, Devo and other performative freaks enjoying themselves.
SUEP have received coverage in Independent & Clash, (among many others), with big support from Mark Riley and Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music) for early singles.
Mark Riley described SUEP’s debut single and album opener, ‘Domesticated Dream’ (2021) as “perfect pop music."
They have played countless gigs over the last couple of years, with their first ever headline show at London’s Stag Head selling out immediately, toured with contemporaries such as Garden Centre and Ex-Void, and performed at 2022’s The Great Escape
DOG DAISIES
Dog Daisies are a cinematic DIY indie-pop band based around the home-studio adventures of Lancaster songwriter Stephen Hudson.
Inspired by midnight walks and motorways, they have released a flurry of playful, inventive records on
Sheffield label Bingo Records garnering praise from critics and spins aplenty from BBC 6 Music's Marc Riley.
Their latest record Moonbathing saw the band tour the UK as well as open for Katy J Pearson, The Pictish Trail, The Lovely Eggs and Steve Mason.
Fans of putting out songs in unconventional formats (postcards, recycled tapes); last summer's single Fenham Carr was released as an Alfred Wainwright-inspired walking pamphlet complete with hidden downloads on a 10 mile circular around their home city.
Akin to Sea Power, Mercury Rev and Grandaddy, Dog Daisies' brand of indie rock invites you to escape in the wilderness on their doorstep, whilst maintaining a lyrical romanticism and sound all of their own.
HOLIDAY GHOSTS
A prolific four-piece of musicians and friends bring their hip-shaking, head thrashing, raw and upbeat energy to their recordings and unforgettable live shows. The result is unadulterated and unclean, unabashed and uncompromised. As drummer, Katja Rackin, and guitarist Sam Stacpoole, share lead vocal duties, their voices come together as one with dispersed harmonies, often joined by rhythm guitarist Ben Nightingale, and grounded by Morgan Lloyd-Mathews tastefully simplistic bass grooves. Call it garagy, jangly, rock n rolly, indie, punky, poppy, whatever you wanty.
With catchy melodies, fiery lyrics, hard-picked guitars and a DIY punk spirit, Holiday Ghosts have cemented their status in the UK music scene and have big plans for the year ahead.
